Protecting Your Heritage Home
In our experience we have found that the most damaging occurrence to heritage buildings is efflorescence. Efflorescence (the soluble salts that are carried up a masonry wall) can crystalize and erode even the strongest construction materials and in the worst cases can even crumble and should be fixed before it does irreparable damage.
Not only that but it often creates a musty smell that can affect sufferers of asthma or allergies.
In order to restore a heritage home it is necessary to understand the environment and surrounds as well as the materials used in the construction of the building.
The smell of damp often comes before the visual evidence of rising water in a building and can be very costly as well as unhealthy and should be dealt with fast.
The best form of action to combat rising damp is finding the source and then treating it with the appropriate solution.
Look for telltale signs and sources such as mouldy or discoloured grouting, brick mould, broken or leaking gutters, damaged plaster walls etc.
